The more I study religions the more I am convinced that man never worshipped anything but himself.

this is so true..i see lot of people constantly obsessed about religion....but they do it for their own purpose..manipulate it use it supress others...damn it...

Really? Man, that's a sad way to look at the world. I know enough about Christianity to say that the only time people have used it to manipulate others is when they pervert the teachings contained in scripture. Sadly, we live in a world where that happens too often. Thankfully God is perfect in our imperction.

In centuries past, Christians burned "witches" at the stake.

Exodus 22:18: "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

How was the murder of "witches" a perverting of the teachings contained in scripture? A perversion of morality, yes, but a perversion of scripture? Nope. Strapping a screaming Wiccan to a stake is spot-on the right thing to do, as far as the teachings of Christian scripture are concerned.

All religions came about by humanity seeking to understand itself and the universe and all things through the human experience.  When religions first came about, they encompassed all the schools of thought we now separate today, science, philosophy, morality, history, etc.  I actually don't mind religion so much at all, it was a method of creating community and celebrating life.  I don't really even have a problem with humanity worshiping itself, or celebrating itself and the entire universe, there is much to be celebrated and enthusiastic about.  But when humans worship themselves as gods, give themselves a place in a heirarchy above other beings, they do something very wrong.  God did not give the planet to humans to own and use, humans do not own anything or anyone.  Religion has evolved to act as a tool of morality and power, to control the masses and allow people to do heinous crimes in the name of an invisible god.

Indeed, there isn't necessarily anything wrong with community and celebrating life. Those sound like good things.

It's the nasty parts of religion that are the problem: Unfounded claims presented as truths, immoral behaviors justified with "God wants this", and "crimes" like blasphemy and heresy invented to punish people who won't go along with the scheme. Those things are awful, and I trust you'd agree.
