I almost shudder at the thought of alluding to the most fatal example of the abuses of grief which the history of mankind has preserved - the Cross. Consider what calamities that engine of grief has produced!

— John Adams, US president

Letter to Thomas Jefferson

With regards to the quote in the subject line and on the page from which I typed this message, can you tell, can you tell me which letter to Thomas Jefferson this is from?

I've only heard that it's from a letter to Thomas Jefferson and can be found in collected works of Jefferson's letters. Some Googling turns up repeated references to the same, but I haven't found a date for the letter.

I suspect that some concerted Googling, especially for details of Jefferson's collected letters, will turn up the answer for you. Books should also be of help, such as The Adams-Jefferson Letters.
